I usually try and call in to this Cafe when passing through Whyalla after having been recommended by a friend a few years ago. Located towards the street frontage of the UniSA Whyalla Campus (look for the sign on Nicholson Ave), there's always a good selection of fresh hot or cold sandwiches rolls, wraps, salads and cakes, whether it be breakfast, morning or afternoon tea or lunch, I've never had a bad experience here and the coffee is usually spot on. The interior is clean and attractive and there are also tables and shade umbrellas outdoors. It was a great touch this week when the barista added a personal message to our Friday take-away coffee (see photo). There is usually plenty of space in the car park on Nicolson Ave, but no facility for a caravan or trailer.
I have been going to this place for ages, about 3 owners in fact, and this current one lifted the place to a bit more than a canteen. Pamela, the lady that works there is the greatest, friendliest and most effecient person I have met. Makes great coffee and the food is good. Sometimes we have meetings there over a coffee and it does get a little noisy but overall great place.

Ordered calamari, chips and a few types of fish in the hope of a lovely dinner. The calamari was soggy and overly rubbery, there were very few chips and somewhat undercooked. The battered fish was oily but otherwise ok however the other fish we ordered were lacking in flavour. All this may have been acceptable if it were cheap and there had been plenty to eat but neither of the those things were true! It's a nice location and staff but to be competitive the store needs to decide on whether they are producing quality product with high pricing or higher value for money. However, if you are hungry and are low on options, give this place a go and let everyone knows how it turns it. Maybe it was a bad evening?
We were staying in the Westlands motel overnight, so tried the food here, the service was fantastic, providing cutlery for us to use for our meals. The kids meals were great with heaps of chips. We ended up with too many chips (but that's not a bad thing). The kids had chicken nuggets and chips and the included fruit box. For the adults we had a steak sandwich with the lot and the 1/2 chicken meal (too much food - we should have just shared the chicken meal). All the food was very tasty. Have no hesitation in recommending the Bottle & Bird. The place was busy with what seemed to be many locals also getting their takeaway (always a good sign).
